SD Guthrie International Zwijndrecht Refinery is a multi-vegetable oil processing factory in the Netherlands. We are part of SD Guthrie, based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Sam Van den Bergh & Anton Jurgens started the Zwijndrecht factory in 1911, when they decided to build a soap & hardening factory.

Today, the factory brings all key oil-processing techniques together in one location. This flexibility lets us adjust the melting behavior of oils. So, we modify tropical oils with ingredients that fit exactly the needs of our customers' products. This gives you access to a broader range of oils and fats.

Our Mission as a Multi-Vegetable Oil Processing Factory

Our mission is to supply (non-)food and feed manufacturers with trusted vegetable oils and fats, combining quality, safety, and service reliability.

Our production is certified under ISO 14001 (environmental management), FSSC 22000 (food safety), and GMP+. We monitor quality and food safety at every process step, including checks to prevent contamination such as MOSH/MOAH from entering the finished product.

A Century of Vegetable Oil Processing

It all began in 1911 1911

It all began in 1911. Sam Van den Bergh & Anton Jurgens decided to build a soap, hardening, and vegetable oil factory in Zwijndrecht. Production started in 1913.
A all new Refinery 1915

Jurgens opened a new oil refinery with a capacity of 400 tons a week at Zwijndrecht.
Merger of oil and margarine activities 1927

Van den Bergh and Jurgens merged their margarine and oil-refinery activities, forming N.V. Maatschappij der Vereenigde Oliefabrieken (MVO) at Zwijndrecht and the Margarine Union.
Formation of Unilever 1927

A new merger of the Dutch Margarine Union, the English Margarine Union, and Lever Brothers Ltd created Lever Brothers & Unilever, later renamed Unilever N.V. MVO became a Unilever subsidiary. Between 1965 and 1980, the site modernized extensively, and in the 1970s it was renamed Unimills BV.
Full-fledged refinery 1990

Unimills became a full-fledged refinery when Unilever rationalized its margarine business, growing it into Europe's second-largest refinery.
Sime Darby Unimills B.V. 2001

Golden Hope Plantations Berhad (Malaysia) acquired Unimills; following the 2007 merger of Sime Darby, Guthrie, and Golden Hope, the site was renamed Sime Darby Unimills B.V.
Refinery upgrades 2013

Between 2003 and 2013, the site expanded into biodiesel, added two flaking lines, two fractionation lines, roughly 30,000 MT of storage capacity, a plant for enzymatic rearrangement, a new innovation center and laboratory, a pilot plant, a new packaging line, and a lecithin facility.
A full-fledged refinery 2019

Renamed Sime Darby Oils Zwijndrecht Refinery B.V.

In 2019, Sime Darby Unimills changed it's name to Sime Darby Oils Zwijndrecht Refinery B.V.

In 2024, Sime Darby Oils Zwijndrecht Refinery changed it's name to SD Guthrie International Zwijndrecht Refinery B.V.
